The town of Humboldt is located in Richardson county in the southeast corner of Nebraska. A person can easily drive to cities in Iowa, Missouri and Kansas as they are only a few miles away. We are 85 miles south of Omaha, 140 miles northwest of Kansas City, 65 miles from St. Joseph or Topeka. Peru State College and Southeast Community College in Beatrice are within a 45 minute drive.
Humboldt has a personal approach to Economic Development led by the group Humboldt Share, Inc. This group is ready and willing to work with individuals or businesses that are looking at making or increasing their investment in the Humboldt community with the focus on job creation and job retention and stabilizing the economy of the region. Humboldt Shares works with many economic development partners - NPPD, Black Hills Energy, OPPD, Nebraska Department of Economic Development - to be that helpful/personal link if you have questions on what is available here in Humboldt and southeast Nebraska for available sites and buildings, as well as a referral for financing and where to find specific services.

Tax Increment Financing:
The City of Humboldt has had a blight and substandard determination study completed. That first step towards making Tax Increment Financing available has been made to allow for a shorter ramp up time for any developer or business who wants to take advantage of what is available via the Nebraska statutes by using this financing option for the "public" portion of infrastructure improvements.
Recent community projects include the addition of the Humboldt Commercial Historic District to the National Register of Historic Places, restoration of the bandstand, painting a mural on the wall of the Lodge building, updating the water and sidewalks in the downtown, and replacing the bath house at the swimming pool. Additional recent projects include a major water systems improvement in cooperation with Richardson County Rural Water District #1, upgrades to the municipal swimming pool and our emergency services facility. Current projects underway include renovations to the Humboldt Municipal Auditorium and efforts to fundraise for new playground equipment for the City park.
Humboldt has a variety of civic organizations striving for community betterment. The Humboldt Chamber of Commerce sponsors many activities. Other organizations include Humboldt Shares, Inc., Lions Club, Rotary, Humboldt Summer Ball Association, Humboldt Motor Sports, American Legion Post #269, Humboldt Community Foundation, Inc., HTRS Public School Foundation, Inc., Friends of the Library, Friends of the Auditorium, HTRS Athletic Boosters Club and Quad County Historical & Research Society. All of these organizations are committed to making Humboldt "A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE."
Humboldt offers an exciting blend of history, recreation and scenic beauty with a quality of life only dreamed of in today's fast-paced world. Humboldt's population is approximately 900 people.
